Adherence To Asbestos Legislation:Asbestos testing is essential in determining if building products contain asbestos. All testing is carried out in accordance with the requirements of Australian Standard - Method for the qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk samples [AS 4964 - 2004]. What Is Asbestos?Asbestos material is the fibrous form of mineral silicates belonging to the serpentine and amphibole groups of rock-forming minerals. The most significant types include chrysotile, crocidolite and amosite (white, brown or blue asbestos). Asbestos is the binding material used in many products. The material was so effective as a binding material that it was used in over 3,000 products in and around the home and to a small degree, in cars. In the past, the dangers of asbestos were completely unknown, and exposure was high in a lot of industries and jobs, particularly those working in and around the asbestos mine. Tradesmen working with and installing the material were also exposed but to a lesser degree to than the miners as the material was more contained and the saturation of fibres in the air was lower. However, those demolishing asbestos-ridden structures were at great risk. There is no safe degree of exposure to asbestos. For this reason, it is vital that each homeowner and each commercial entity undertaking a construction project have asbestos identified so that safe handling procedures can be followed if asbestos is present. |
